Brainerd City’s Personnel & Finance Committee voted on Sept. 15 to authorize two Office of Traffic Safety grants for the police department for fiscal year 2025.
Staff described a traffic-safety enforcement grant of $60,100, of which $3,900 may be used for administrative costs and up to $3,200 for matching equipment and training reimbursements. The committee adopted a resolution authorizing the police chief to enter into and execute that agreement.
The committee also approved a Traffic Safety Officer (TSO) grant that staff said will reimburse the city for up to $150,000 to cover salary, overtime and fringe costs for officers assigned to targeted traffic-enforcement duties, including speeding, seat-belt and child-safety-seat enforcement, distracted driving and impaired-driving enforcement. Staff noted the department currently has three certified drug-recognition evaluators who will rotate through TSO assignments to maximize grant utilization. The committee voted to authorize the police chief to execute the TSO agreement as recommended.
