Parent asks why AVID at Northwest High is being cut

Elizabeth Pennington told the Clarksville Montgomery County School Board during a public hearing on the proposed 2026–2027 Consolidated Budget that her son, Caleb, is a sophomore in the district’s AVID program at Northwest High School and that she had been told the program would be discontinued.
Pennington said she had encouraged her son to enroll in AVID and was seeking "a real reason" for the program’s removal. She asked whether Kenwood would retain its AVID program and whether Kenwood’s implementation was different from AVID at Northwest.
A staff member told Pennington the program’s funding is tied to a grant and that staff would follow up. "If you'll leave your information, we'll get in contact with you," the staff member said. Pennington’s contact was recorded and staff agreed to provide a follow-up explanation.
The public hearing concluded without an immediate explanation on the record for the AVID change; board staff said they would contact Pennington with more information.
