Board recognizes student winners, educator of the month and NAACP contest entries

Fairbanks district honored the North Pole Middle School Honor Band, spelling-bee winner Andy Seeve, Educator of the Month Teresa Vick, and NAACP contest winners; a student read an original poem about ancestral history during the ceremony.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board opened its April 21 meeting with student performances and recognitions. The North Pole Middle School Honor Band performed "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk the Moon under the direction of Dr. Michael McConnell. Band students were thanked by the board for showcasing district music programming.
McKenzie Steiger, elementary curriculum coordinator, presented Andy Seeve (seventh grade, Borealis Charter School) as the Interior Alaska Spelling Bee first-place winner; staff said Seeve will represent Interior Alaska at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 26–28, 2026.
Julie Denney Eberhart (assistant principal, Lathrop High School) presented Teresa Vick, an English Language Learner specialist, as the district’s Excellent Educator of the Month for April 2026, praising her caseload management and dedication to multilingual learners.
The Fairbanks NAACP Education Committee presented winners from its Black History Month contest. Contest presenters recognized winners across grade bands; student Evangeline Gillis read an original poem titled "I'm Okay" and described her art entry that explores ancestral history, endurance and creativity. Board members and the audience responded with praise.
These recognition items were ceremonial and informational; they did not require board action.
