Students showcase UW‑La Crosse Kids College; summer school, quiz bowl and spring events previewed

A group of sixth graders addressed the Viroqua Area School District board to report on their experience at UW‑La Crosse's Kids College, a full‑day program where students choose multiple sessions. The students said 12 representations were selected from the school after teachers reviewed applications and letters; chaperones included Mr. Olson and Mazenda.

Students described session highlights: Ginger Parker said her favorite was origami because it allowed independent work, and another student praised the Ezone rec center activities. Kristen, in administrator reports, told the board she had collected 221 summer school registrations and described the ongoing process to balance classes, assign teachers and add extra supports where needed. She also summarized hosting the Mississippi Valley Gifted Intelligence Network regional quiz bowl for seventh graders, with eight schools participating and Tomah's Team 1 winning the championship.

Administrators previewed upcoming events: prom (theme 'Midnight Garden') the coming Saturday, an honors program with scholarships expected on May 6 and graduation in approximately two and a half weeks with hopes for an outdoor ceremony. Board members thanked chaperones and volunteers and noted continued community support and donations to athletics and student activities.

The board also reviewed a list of donations over $100 supporting athletics, theater and classroom activities and heard that policy 7510 (use of district facilities) is being updated to codify current practice and fee structures.
