The Viroqua Area School District board approved revised policies that the administration said align district practices with 2025 Wisconsin Act 57 and updated state legal requirements.
The revisions (policies 1213, 3213 and 4213) clarify standards of care and behavioral boundaries to protect student safety, the administration told the board. Policy 8462 (child abuse and neglect) was amended to create a comprehensive framework for immediate identification and mandatory reporting of child abuse or neglect, and to require staff to complete Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) instruction training within six months of hire and every five years thereafter. The updated language also integrates explicit reporting timeframes for sexual misconduct by staff and attaches disciplinary consequences for failure to report.
The board placed these policy updates on the consent agenda and approved them as presented. School officials said the policy changes respond to recent state law changes and are primarily compliance and safety updates rather than new discretionary programs.
Policy 7510 (use of district facilities) received a first reading at the meeting; administrators said it codifies current facility‑use practices, introduces a fee structure consistent with nearby districts and will return for a second reading at the next meeting.
Board members asked that questions about policy 7510 be directed to committee members or Dr. Hill before the next meeting.
