Commissioners approve three criminal-justice grants to cover probation and problem-solving court staff

Abby said the probation-officer salary request to the Indiana Department of Corrections is $58,473. The community corrections grant request (submitted to the statewide program that supports officer salaries and operational costs) was presented as $52,816; Abby said counties were asked to request full-year funding this cycle after guidance that statewide allocations may be cut 20–25 percent. The third request, a wellness-court (drug court) grant through the Indiana Office of Court Services, was presented as $127,865 and covers a probation-officer salary and program supports run out of Superior Court.
Abby explained the context: state-level funding cuts are increasing county burdens for monitoring and treatment while Department of Corrections requests more intensive supervision to support earlier prison-release programs. She said the department has planned for cuts, pursued local grants and found a lower-cost ankle-monitoring vendor to reduce expenses.
The board voted to approve the three grant applications by voice vote; Abby said the county’s insurance coverage for staff allowed the program to continue despite shrinking state support.
