The Town of Merrillville Plan Commission voted to restore approximately 19.54 acres commonly known as the Crossroads plaza from an M2 limited industrial overlay to C2 community commercial zoning.
Town Manager Michael Griffin explained the reversion is corrective: a prior developer was given a finite period to apply for development permits and did not meet that timeline, so the town asked the commission to restore the property's prior zoning. "I'm representing the town council this evening as petitioner," Griffin said, urging the commission to permit the reversion so the town can proceed with necessary appeals and ordinance steps.
Commission members expressed support; several spoke in favor of restoring the C2 classification. Legal counsel indicated the plan commission has the authority to recommend the zoning change and that procedural prerequisites were met. The commission moved and approved the reversion P7Z1-0426 by roll call (seven yeses).
The action returns the parcel to the prior community-commercial classification; the town manager and legal staff said an ordinance will be prepared for council consideration.
