Brainerd council asks county for January 2025 homeless-count data and records of related grant dispersments

At the Jan. 5 Brainerd City Council meeting, Councilmember Jeff Chzach moved that the city request Crowing County Community Services provide the January 2025 point‑in‑time homeless‑count data, records showing when the county submitted that count, and records of dispersments of state grant funds used locally (including any hotel placements and supports associated with Bridge on 7th).
Chzach said the request is intended to clarify public reporting and to identify what services were available last summer. "I'd like to ask Crowing County... to show us the records of when that was provided," he said. The motion was seconded and passed.
Deputy Chief Rundy told the council that, to his knowledge, no homeless people had been arrested or cited under the city’s camping restrictions in the last six to eight months. Planning staff said there were indications some hotel rooms were made available as a temporary measure last summer; staff did not confirm staffing arrangements for those rooms and asked for more time to collect detailed records.
Next steps: City staff will submit a formal data request to Crowing County Community Services seeking the January 2025 point‑in‑time submission records and any county records of grant dispersments for local housing or hotel support. The council requested county responses and dispersment detail be provided to the city for local review.
