April, who identified herself as representing Safe Routes to School, asked the Decorah City Council to formally declare May as Walk Bike Month and laid out a calendar of events and resources to promote walking and bicycling citywide. "Walk Bike Month is an opportunity to build on what we already have," she said, highlighting Decorah's trails, sidewalks, bike routes, schools and downtown as assets for active transportation.
April described materials and events that will be available beginning at the Earth Day Festival, including a walk-bike matrix and map to show estimated walk and bike travel times between common destinations, distance signage to be posted around town, and a bicycle-recycling/redistribution program run with the Wesik recycling center so usable bikes can be passed to people who need them.
She announced a Walk & Roll to School Day on May 6 with library drop-off support for families who live farther away, a family "walk-bike pizza party" at WBaker Park on May 16 in partnership with Strong Towns and Park Wreck, and school-based bike-safety instruction (third- and fourth-grade PE classes and second-grade bike-safety lessons) with no-cost helmets provided to students in need. April said the police department is helping produce transportation safety videos to be released during May.
The presentation emphasized safety during the summer construction season and encouraged motorists to be alert in detour and construction zones. The council thanked April for the presentation; no formal vote was necessary for the proclamation on the meeting record.
Looking ahead, April urged residents to pick up event information at the Earth Day Festival and to take advantage of the month’s programming to make walking and biking routine in Decorah.
