Planning commission recommends amendments to Brainerd sign ordinance

The Brainerd Planning Commission voted to recommend changes to the city’s sign ordinance (chapter 515) to city council, staff said at a public hearing.
Director Cranic told commissioners the proposed updates would align sign regulations with state statute for election years, limit banner signs to 60 days per calendar year, permit signs to encroach into MnDOT right-of-way with MnDOT approval, require removal of signs that are in disrepair or no longer associated with a business, allow larger pylon signs in the general industrial district, and add design standards for wall, canopy and marquee signs. Staff recommended holding a public hearing and forwarding the ordinance to city council as presented.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. Commissioner Gorum moved to approve the recommendation; the motion was seconded and carried.
The commission noted the ordinance will next be considered by the City Council, which will conduct a first reading on October 6. Staff said the council will have the final opportunity to make changes before formal adoption.
If approved by council, the changes would be added to chapter 515 and implemented according to the city’s zoning and code enforcement procedures.
