Commission gives first reading to ordinance adding large-load electric rate

The Madison City Commission gave first reading to Ordinance 1688 on April 20 to add a Large Load Electric Rate (LLER) customer classification to local code.
Jameson told the commission the ordinance updates sections 1413b and 1423 to reflect the city's adoption of Heartland's interruptible load program (formerly the data program). He summarized eligibility criteria for the LLER: a minimum peak demand of 5 megawatts, a minimum load factor of about 80%, willingness to be interruptible and payment of any studies and connection costs. "It does not change any existing language. It simply adds new subsections to accommodate the large load electric rate or LLER," Jameson said.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the amendment and were told the change creates a new customer class without altering existing tariff language. After brief questions the commission moved and approved the first reading of the ordinance.
