Wilson County law enforcement committee approves status-quo budgets, forwards requests to county budget committee

The Wilson County Law Enforcement Committee voted to approve status-quo budgets for the department’s general fund and drug fund and to forward the requests to the county budget committee for further consideration.

Chief (presenting) said the general fund budget is largely unchanged from the prior year, with the only planned increase tied to a salary adjustment expected to take effect in January. He also noted small increases in payroll-related items such as Social Security but characterized the overall request as status quo.

Committee members asked about the department’s fuel outlook; the chief said fuel costs have risen in recent months and the department will likely need additional fuel funding within about a month to six weeks unless conditions change. The chief also said the department planned to move some monies into the medical line to cover needs identified during budget review.

A motion to approve the status-quo general fund budget was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee then separately moved and approved the drug fund status-quo budget; members said the drug fund request was essentially a direct match to last year’s appropriation.

The approved actions were procedural steps to transmit the department’s budget requests to the county budget committee, which will consider them as part of the county’s overall appropriations process.
