Tuscaloosa City Council pre-council members discussed an application from Speake's Market for a retail beer and retail table wine (off-premises only) license for a proposed location at 914 Queen City Avenue, across from Alabama Power.
"They are applying for a retail beer and a retail table wine off premises only," Mayor Beth said as she reviewed the application and staff materials, which included an aerial view, storefront photos and a store layout showing the snack area near the front of the shop. Mayor Beth listed proposed hours: Sunday noon to 10:00 p.m.; Monday through Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; and Thursday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Council member Lee said staff and council had held multiple meetings with residents and the property owner. Lee said the primary neighborhood concerns were limited parking and the potential for customers to block traffic entering and exiting the site. "That area has become incredibly busy," Lee said, adding that the intersection near the site "is incredibly busy" and that neighbors worry about the business fitting the character of the changing neighborhood.
City staff flagged the lack of parking and the late closing hours on Thursday through Saturday as public-safety concerns. The presentation materials provided to council included store imagery and the proposed interior layout.
No formal vote on the liquor-license request was recorded in the pre-council portion of the transcript provided. The discussion concluded after members asked questions and shared constituent concerns. The matter remains subject to future formal consideration under the council's public procedures.
