West Bend council honors three departing aldermen, issues Arbor Day and safety proclamations

The council opened its April 20 session with a series of proclamations and recognitions and concluded its ceremonial business by approving three resolutions honoring departing aldermen.
Mayor Joel Longer read an Arbor Day proclamation recognizing West Bend as a Tree City USA and proclaimed April 24, 2026 Arbor Day in the city. The mayor also proclaimed May 9 International Migratory Bird Day and noted the city’s participation in migratory‑bird conservation. The council paused to recognize members of the Washington County Youth Hockey Squirt 2B state-champion team — Grayson Kurlinsky, Brock Puce and Jackson Talbin — and invited players and family members to join the dais for photographs.
The council read a proclamation recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the mayor and Chief Norin named staff and supervisors in the dispatch center by name in appreciation. A separate proclamation recognized Home Fire Sprinkler Week (May 10–16); a local fire‑safety advocate spoke about the life‑saving role of automatic sprinklers.
Later in the meeting the council read and adopted three resolutions honoring Alderman John Bushick (District 1) for 12 years of service, Alderman Brett Burrquist (District 3) for six years, and Alderman Bill Schmidt (District 7) for two years. Each resolution was approved by voice vote; departing aldermen offered brief remarks of thanks.
