Board considers fire-code amendment to prohibit alarm panels in private garages

Village staff on April 7 presented a proposed amendment to the recently adopted fire code intended to clarify where fire alarm control panels may be located.
Under the proposed amendment, when a separate control room does not exist the fire-alarm control panel would not be permitted to be installed within a private garage or a room controlled by unauthorized personnel. The amendment would also require weatherproof enclosures for panels installed outside a building and clarify which authority has final say on panel location. Staff said the fire-protection district has already adopted similar language.
Staff told the board the amendment would be placed on the next meeting’s agenda for adoption consideration and, if approved, would take effect May 1. Trustees asked a few clarifying questions about where panels would be located and how maintenance and access would be handled; staff and the fire chief said typical installations include a separate enclosure or locked vestibule to ensure access for service and the fire department.
The matter was informational at this meeting; no final adoption vote occurred.
