Anchorage commission to schedule follow-up meeting to consider mayoral salary review

Members of the Municipality of Anchorage Salaries and Emoluments Commission agreed on April 21 to schedule a follow-up meeting to consider whether to review and potentially adjust the mayor’s salary, but took no formal action on compensation at the session.
Member Karen Northworthy said the commission recently reviewed Assembly and School Board benefits and "I think it's time that we look at the mayor again," urging the group to schedule a meeting to examine the mayor’s compensation.
Staff advised the commission that substantive changes to elected-official compensation normally require two meetings — one to discuss and one to approve — to allow public notice. "It always takes two meetings, one meeting to talk about it and then one meeting to approve it just so there's enough time for public notice on the changes," Matthew Frieda said.
The commission did not set a date. Members agreed to ask staff to circulate availability (a Doodle poll) and try to find a quorum before the height of summer, noting members may participate by Zoom if traveling. The commission moved committee organization from new business to unfinished business for the next meeting to allow full participation and a formal vote when more members can attend.
Next steps: Staff will circulate possible dates; the commission will place the mayoral salary review on a future meeting agenda if members decide to pursue substantive changes.
