IT director proposes managed security service, cites annual savings

At the April 21 Finance & Administration Committee meeting, Information Technology Director Fletcher LCroy briefed the committee on a planned change to the city's cybersecurity approach.
LCroy said staff reviewed about six vendors after the current five-year-old contract began to expire and recommended a managed service provider that would bring a security operations center, stronger threat detection and faster incident response. He told the committee the proposed new arrangement will reduce the city’s annual cybersecurity spend from about $91,000 to roughly $44,000 while providing improved integrations with systems already in use.
“We evaluated several solutions,” LCroy said, adding that the recommended provider would centralize telemetry and present it in “one pane of glass” for staff. He declined to provide detailed operational specifics in open session, offering to provide follow-up material by email for members who want more technical detail.
Council members asked for clarification on the apparent increase in features at a lower cost; LCroy said the previous solution included complex features that the current team was not using or managing, and the recommended approach fits the size and capacity of the city’s IT team.
No motion or vote was taken at the committee meeting; staff will return with contract details or an agenda bill if further council action is required.
