Pocomoke City schedules May 18 hearing on proposed annexation of Brittingham parcel

On April 20 the Pocomoke City Council held first reading of Resolution 2026R-11, which proposes annexing a 2.494-acre parcel (identified in Worcester County land records) owned by Wayne T. Brittingham Sr. and Flora S. Brittingham into the corporate limits of Pocomoke City.

The resolution’s summation in the meeting record cites Maryland statutory requirements for annexation and states the petition meets applicable legal criteria, including signatures representing at least 25 percent of registered voters in the area and owners of at least 25 percent of assessed valuation (as described in the resolution text). The council noted that if annexed, the property—currently zoned SC2 under Worcester County—would be provisionally classified as R1 in city code until a formal rezoning; the Pocomoke City Planning and Zoning Commission prospectively approved classification as B2 general business conditional on successful annexation.

The council scheduled a public hearing on the annexation and the required annexation plan for May 18, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall and said a copy of the proposed resolution, petition signatures, and the annexation agreement and plan will be available at City Hall. During the meeting an attorney representing the petitioners spoke to thank the council and staff and said the petitioners hope to begin construction as soon as possible, offering to assist staff to expedite the process.

Because this was a first reading, the council did not vote to complete annexation; the May 18 hearing will be the next formal step in the process.
