Board approves modernization bids, roofing work and expands after-school tutoring contract

The ABC Unified School District board on April 21 approved a string of construction and services contracts and a contract amendment to expand after-school tutoring services.
Facilities staff recommended and the board approved low-bid awards for modernization and site projects across several elementary schools. Highlights included awarding Willow Elementary modernization to Archical Design Build, roofing work at Melbourne Elementary to Chapman Coast Roof Co., and additional modernization/site-work contracts awarded to Nazarian Group and New Dynasty Construction for Cerritos/Critos, Kennedy and Burbank projects; site work at Carver Elementary was awarded to Spec Construction Co. Staff reported competitive bidding for each package and said work will begin after school is out for summer.
The board also approved an amendment to the TutorZone tutoring contract to expand TutorZone services in the ABC Excels after-school program in response to increased enrollment. District staff said TutorZone provides flexible hourly tutoring (noted in the contract as roughly $100 per hour per class) and that approximately 1,500 students are being tracked in tutoring data this year; members asked for clearer school-by-school metrics and student outcome reporting. Staff said the amended contract reflects current enrollment growth in ABC Excels and that the district will provide outcome data to the board in future updates.
In other business the board approved grant applications and partnerships intended to bring additional wellness and middle-school program supports to the district; staff noted Kaiser Permanente funding for staff wellness and a possible $865,000 program grant for learning communities if the department is awarded funds.
What’s next: construction projects will begin this summer; staff will return to the board with pilot schedules, lists of schools served by expanded tutoring, and outcome data for the tutoring program.
