ABC Unified highlights AVID expansion, teacher certification and student speaker selection under LCAP

District leaders described plans to expand AVID across grades, add dual-enrollment opportunities in 2026–27, and celebrated a student chosen as a national AVID speaker and several teachers who completed AVID certification supported by LCAP funds.
District leaders told the board on April 21 that AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a central piece of the district’s LCAP goal to advance college and career readiness.
Dr. Castro described AVID offerings across four high schools, five middle schools and eight elementary schools and said AVID will add dual-enrollment opportunities for high-school elective classes in 2026–27 so students can earn college credit while in high school. AVID strategies are embedded elementary schoolwide and used across TK–12 as part of the district’s college- and career-readiness strategy.
The district also celebrated Railene Mattis, a student selected from about 800 national applicants to be one of 20 national AVID student speakers at a national summer institute. Dr. Castro said Railene will speak to thousands of educators in Dallas in June.
Staff recognized nine teachers who completed an AVID certified educator course funded through the LCAP and described that professional learning as a multi-step, capstone-based process intended to change classroom practices and strengthen student outcomes.
Board members asked for continued expansion and wondered how the district will fund additional site participation; district staff said LCAP funds and phased implementation will guide expansion and that more schools may be added each year.
