ABC Unified honors schools and students: awards for safety, academics, sustainability and the arts

At its April 21 meeting ABC Unified School District’s board celebrated a series of awards and recognitions from across the district.
Transportation Supervisor Luis Rivera introduced school bus driver Jill Marie Ggera, who the California Highway Patrol recommended for recognition after 27 years of service and an accident-free driving record; Joe Pac, representing Assemblywoman Sharon Cook Silva's 67th District office, presented a certificate on behalf of the assembly member.
The board recognized Cerritos High School and Whitney High School as 2026 California Distinguished Schools for, among other things, work closing the achievement gap. Speakers noted districtwide AVID and other strategies used to accelerate learning for low-income and English-learner students.
Bragg Elementary received a California Green Ribbon School designation at the Gold level for sustainability work the principal described as including a 90% reduction in landfill waste through a student-led trash-free lunch program and a reported 73% reduction in energy usage linked in part to district solar installations.
Cerritos High School’s theater program and students were honored after winning multiple first-place awards at the International Thespian State Festival; teacher John Zamora introduced student winners and board members praised the program’s role in student development.
Board members and district staff praised the recognized individuals and schools and took photos with honorees. Staff said certificates and ceremonial presentations would follow.
