The Greenwood Common Council heard from the fire chief on April 20, 2026, as Council introduced Ordinance 2615 to increase the number of assistant chief positions in the fire department.
Sponsored by Mr. Moan, Ordinance 2615 was introduced as new business. The fire chief told the council the department has grown over the last three years, is about to add a fifth station and added 24 firefighters to operations. The chief said the department needs additional administrative structure "to divide up some of the divisions and better accountability," and that many departments of similar size use assistant chief positions for operations and administration.
Council did not vote on final adoption during this meeting; the measure was introduced and will follow the city's ordinance process. No specific budget figures for the new positions were provided during the presentation; the chief described the change as an administrative staffing need tied to recent growth.
The council will consider the ordinance in subsequent readings and, if adopted, Human Resources and the fire department will follow the city's hiring and budget procedures to implement the new positions.
