La Joya ISD honors longtime educators, names new executive director of fine arts and celebrates communications awards

La Joya ISD opened its April 22 meeting with a series of recognitions for longtime educators, volunteers and district staff.

Blanca Canu introduced a recognition honoring former La Joya ISD mariachi director Emilio Kantu, who the district said served for 37 years beginning in 1982. Family members attended and thanked the district for the tribute.

The board also recognized Mr. Adame — a longtime band director who was celebrated for his selection to the Texas Band Masters Hall of Fame — and announced he will serve next school year as La Joya ISD executive director of fine arts. In remarks onstage, Mr. Adame described learning that an additional $800,000 would be made available to support fine‑arts programming, instruments and supplies; district leaders said that funding will be used to expand programming and resources.

Dr. Marcy Sorenson and board members also recognized Dr. Maria Filimina Leo, a former superintendent, and members of her family were present. The board praised Dr. Leo’s long service and community leadership.

Later in the meeting, the district’s public relations and communications office was recognized for awards at the Texas School Public Relations Association and the American Advertising Federation. Blanca said the communications team won 15 gold awards, six silver awards and one bronze award, including a best‑in‑category honor, and named team members who work on strategic communications, public relations, media and digital content for the district.

The recognitions were ceremonial and required no board action.
