Council denies Jonathan Street’s appointment to Harford County Board of Education over transparency and fit concerns

The Harford County Council voted to deny the appointment of Jonathan Street to the Board of Education after members voiced concerns about the selection process and Mr. Street’s fit for the role. Council President moved to approve the appointment; after discussion the motion failed with four votes in the negative, two in the affirmative and one absence, and the appointment was denied.

Councilwoman Imhof said she would vote against advancing the appointment, citing community concerns about transparency and saying, “I just don't think Mr. Street has the demeanor to serve on the board of education and bring our community together.” Councilmember Bennett said he had met with Mr. Street and noted the nominee had an impressive resume and budget experience but described his hour-long meeting as “one of the least pleasant conversations” and raised concerns about communications with staff. Other councilmembers expressed similar worries that the selection process lacked the transparency residents have sought and emphasized the need for board members who can collaborate with both the public and fellow board members.

Several councilmembers acknowledged Mr. Street’s budget qualifications and noted the board needs fiscal experience; however, on balance the council declined to confirm the appointment at this session.

The council did not immediately announce a new nominee; further action on filling the seat will follow the council’s usual appointment procedures.
