District lists six open summer meal sites; meals free to those 18 and under

Gay Anderson, who heads the district's child nutrition department, outlined the district's summer meal plan and how sites are selected.
Anderson said the district will run six open locations this summer (Rosa Parks, Terry Redlin, Hayward, John F. Kennedy, Sonia Sotomayor and Susan B. Anthony) serving breakfast (typically about 30 minutes) and lunch (about one hour). She stressed there is no paperwork required at meal time: "somebody from Florida could walk in our door and we have no idea who they are, but they can walk in and have breakfast or lunch with us, no questions asked. 18 and under." Adults who are over 18 will be charged the adult meal price.
Site selection, Anderson said, depends on free-and-reduced counts or census data and coordination with CLC staff to ensure open sites align with where children will be served. The summer meal program is funded through a federal (USDA) program that districts implement when they qualify for open-site status.
Anderson said the district will publicize site details and dates once approved by the USDA and urged families to use the open sites without paperwork during meal hours.
