Tuhey Pool may reopen soon after infrastructure repairs, city officials say

City staff told the Muncie Park and Recreation Board on April 21 that Tuhey Pool’s deteriorated infrastructure has been repaired sufficiently to support reopening and that administrators are recruiting managers and lifeguards to operate the facility.
Mark Ervin said the sanitary district completed many of the needed repairs—replacing valves, pumps and chlorinators—at a fraction of previously quoted costs. That work, he said, makes it plausible for the pool to reopen after testing.
"The infrastructure looks like it can open and be in good shape," Mark said. He added that administration has pledged funds in the current city budget to get the pool operational and that human resources is preparing job postings for manager and lifeguard positions.
The board discussed management options; the YMCA, which previously ran the facility for the city, declined primary management this year because of commitments at a new facility but indicated a willingness to assist where possible. Local swim‑community leaders have identified potential manager candidates and expect lifeguard recruitment to be manageable if the board moves quickly.
Officials said the goal was to open by Memorial Day, though staff cautioned that date was optimistic and reopening could occur shortly thereafter. The board also discussed using rental hours to generate revenue without pricing out public swim access.
Staff will provide an update at the next meeting with confirmed staffing, testing results and a firm opening date.
