Porter County says 911 procedures updated, leaves consolidation decision to towns

Porter County Central Communications staff reported that updated standard operating procedures for emergency 911 dispatch took effect April 1, 2026. Scott, speaking for Central Communications, said the changes reflect the county's role as the primary public safety answering point and clarified that while towns such as Chesterton and Porter may have interest in consolidating dispatch operations, consolidation is not mandatory and rests with each town's governing council.

"Effective April 1st, 2026, Porter County Central Communications implemented updated standard operating procedures for emergency 911 dispatch consistent with the county's authority as the designated primary public safety answering point for Porter County," Scott said during the meeting.

Scott described the process for a town-initiated consolidation: a town council must pass a resolution formally requesting consolidation and specify the date on which consolidation would take effect. Upon receipt of such a resolution, the county commission will review the request and coordinate with the Porter County Council and other parties to determine next steps and timing.

The commissioners did not take action on consolidation; Scott framed the report as informational and as guidance on how a future petition from a town would be handled. The presentation closed with no formal motions beyond the informational update.

The update places procedural responsibility on town councils if they seek consolidation and signals the county's openness to discussions but not unilateral action.
