Library director reports rising use, robust programming and plans for catalog and maker‑space upgrades

The City Council received a report from Librarian Gail on operations, partnerships and upcoming initiatives at the Fergus Falls Public Library.
Gail described staff and volunteer contributions and noted the library is a member of the Viking Library System and the Northern Lights Library Network, providing shared catalogs and twice‑daily delivery service to and from other libraries. She reported the library has "14,116 registered users" within a legal service area population of 19,271 and said the library circulated more than 200,000 items in 2024.
Programming highlights include a growing summer reading program (early registration numbers reported above 1,300), five weekly story times, maker activities, visiting authors and community outreach such as bus trips supported by state legacy funds. Gail said the library relies on grants and partner support — including the Friends of the Library, Lake Region Arts Council and West Central Initiative — for special programming and capital enhancements.
Planned improvements include implementing Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloging, expanding maker‑space equipment (3D printing, Cricut, virtual reality), and adding reservation software for easier room and class signups. Gail also told councilors she supports pedestrian safety improvements near the library and Magnus Park to help patrons access programs more safely.
Councilors praised the presentation and asked staff to consider crosswalk safety and parking impacts; Gail said the building and programs are popular and additional parking would be welcome but the library can adapt through scheduling and street parking.
