Coach says Pop Warner program denied access to Long Branch field; organizers demand review

At the April 22 meeting, Louis Gordius, a lifelong Long Branch resident and longtime youth football coach, told the council his Jersey Shore Dolphins Pop Warner program was denied access to a public recreation field and asked for transparency and an internal review.

Gordius described the program’s benefits and said his organization followed required processes but was escalated and denied while he believes others are allowed field access. “This is not about me. This is about the kids,” he said, asking the council to review whether vetting is applied consistently and to share the written standards or criteria used.

Casey Zimmer, a program volunteer and parent, spoke in support of Gordius, describing the program’s work providing mentorship, meals and transportation to participants and saying the group sought equal access, not special treatment. “These kids deserve equal access,” she said. Zimmer and Gordius asked for a transparent review and for clear, written vetting procedures.

Council response: A council member said recent denials have been escalated to the administration for review, noting the department escalates applications when questions arise and that the city reviewed videos and resident complaints before denying access. The council member also said two other organizations were denied in the past three weeks, and that the governing body must determine what is best for the community.
