Red Bud adopts FY2027 budget; council approves drone, tasers and other purchases

The Red Bud City Council on the committee cycle adopted the FY2027 budget and approved several routine appropriations and capital purchases during its special meeting.
Finance committee members voted to adopt the FY2027 budget and capital plan after staff said the new draft was largely unchanged from the prior month. The committee also approved appropriation ordinance No. 1580 in the amount shown in the packet.
Public health and safety committee members approved a series of equipment and training requests. John (city department presenter) described a donor-funded drone with spotlight, speaker and AI-based search features and said it would be purchased with donated funds and that the city planned to train two police officers and two fire personnel to operate it. The committee voted to authorize purchase of the drone, “not to exceed $22,000,” pending final budget approval.
The committee also approved the purchase of two additional Axon tasers to equip expanding staffing needs. The motion authorized the purchase from Axon Enterprises not to exceed $14,000, with the cost to be financed over the vendor’s proposed payment schedule.
Council members approved multiple smaller capital items and vendor quotes in committee: a new mower for parks (capital rotation), additional sidearms and holsters for officers, and a not-to-exceed UTV/Ranger purchase consistent with the capital plan. The cultural committee approved Resolution 26-003 to close streets for the annual fire parade, and the finance committee approved $500 sponsorships for a local barge trip and a half-page rendezvous booklet ad paid from tourism/hotel–motel tax revenues.
