"The idea being we'll make the call for artists early in the year like February or March and have a pre-planned list of the utility boxes that we want," a commissioner said.
Staff and commissioners agreed several practical checks are necessary: confirm box physical condition, coordinate with the electric director and public works for site suitability and consider special-case restrictions (residential proximity, traffic concerns). Commissioners asked staff to compile a short list of boxes in good condition for the commission to review, with the understanding that some sites will still need case-by-case assessment.
The commission did not approve specific locations at the meeting; Jordan Layman said he would look into whether the city maintains an inventory map and would draft a short initial list for the commission to refine. Any final wrap placements and expenditures will require coordination with the appropriate departments and consent-agenda approval if spending is required.
