Kennewick board approves 2026–27 school calendar amid debate over conference timing

The Kennewick School District Board approved the 2026–2027 school calendar after a presentation by Miss St. Hilaire and discussion among board members about conference timing and instructional priorities.

The proposed calendar — developed with the Kennewick Education Association — aligns major breaks and the first day of school with neighboring districts (Richland and Pasco), shifts one professional learning day to immediately before school to allow additional preparation time, and slightly moves the last day of school earlier by one day. The board voted to approve the one-year calendar after questions and comments.

Several board members urged reconsideration of parent-teacher conference dates. One member argued conferences would be more effective earlier in the semester so parents and teachers can intervene sooner with struggling students, while the association work team reported mixed feedback and recommended retaining the later dates for this one-year calendar with the expectation of further discussion. Administrators said the calendar team prioritized student learning, family-friendly breaks and alignment with neighboring districts.

On roll call, the calendar passed with board votes recorded as Yes from Mr. Connors, Doctor Miller, Miss Gledhill and Mr. Galbraith; Mr. Valentine voted No. The student representative Diego's vote was recorded as Yes for the calendar presentation. Board members asked administration to study whether relocating conference dates in future calendars would better support student achievement and family engagement.
