City staff recommends $55,350 heater purchase for Sanitary Lift Station No. 5 after failure

Public works staff said Sanitary Lift Station No. 5 requires a replacement wet-well heater after two elements failed and the third was only marginal, recommending purchase of an explosion-proof unit to address safety and reliability.
"The recommendation is to purchase another heater for the lift station," Mr. Stoall told the council, presenting a vendor quote from Johnson Controls for $55,350 for the heater itself and noting additional electrical hookup costs by Eagle Electric, estimated at about $556 with potential to reach $3,000 if extra components are required.
Council member Bill Helms asked about the heater's age and possible causes for the failure. Staff said the existing heater was installed in 2015 and offered possible causes including an air-balance issue or glycol degradation; staff plans to include an air equalization component in the replacement design to address the likely cause.
No formal action was taken at the work session; staff presented the quote and answered questions and indicated the item would appear on a future meeting agenda for formal approval if council wishes to proceed.
