Leonia reports improved HIB score for 2024–25; district says procedures and programs drove gains

Dr. Caramanica reported to the Leonia Board of Education that the district’s annual harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) score for the 2024–25 school year was 71 out of a possible 76, which he said the district reports as 91 percent.
The superintendent said the state reviews the district’s self-assessment alongside Student Safety Data System (SSDS) information before publishing the grades. "These grades are posted on our district website," he said, and noted the district will include a cover sheet explaining how the HIB grades are scored.
Dr. Caramanica attributed the improvement to several administrative changes and programmatic efforts. He said the largest scoring change came from "our HIB procedures and investigations" after work to clean up procedures and ensure consistency across schools, and pointed to increased programming at the middle school addressing incident types and supports for students.
Board members heard that the district will submit another self-assessment in October and that April is the month when the state’s reports are received and finalized. The superintendent said the district would continue to review and post related materials for families and staff.
The board did not take any policy action on HIB at the meeting; Dr. Caramanica’s update was presented as an informational report and posted materials and future reporting deadlines were described as next steps.
