The Spanish Fort City Council voted unanimously on April 20 to approve Resolution No. 1592-2026, naming portions of Alabama State Route 225 within the city's corporate limits "American Patriots Way." The proposal was presented as part of the 250th anniversary observances of the Declaration of Independence and to honor local historical contributions connected to the Blakeley battlefield and veterans.
Mr. Connor outlined the resolution, saying the name would apply from the intersection with U.S. Highway 31 to the intersection with I-65 and noting historical context including the Saluda Hill Cemetery and the role of United States Colored Troops at Blakeley. Council members said the city will partner with Baldwin County and nonprofit groups on signage; officials hoped signage could be installed in time for the Fourth of July, subject to postal and state coordination.
A motion to approve the resolution passed on a unanimous roll-call vote. The county commission previously approved the same naming outside the city limits; council members described the effort as coordinated across local and state stakeholders.
