Maintenance and transportation update: chargers online, electric-bus fleet expanding

Christine Rosado, the district’s maintenance and operations lead, presented a yearly update on facilities, maintenance and transportation projects.
Rosado said the department completed numerous projects (paving, roofing, portable siting, playground wood-chip upgrades) and that from August through February the maintenance team completed 1,785 work orders (ranging from minor tasks to larger repairs). She said the department is implementing a five-year rotation for painting and deferred-maintenance projects to keep sites in better condition.
On transportation, Rosado reported the district currently has 15 large buses, six of which are electric; the district is awaiting seven shorter electric buses and has negotiated to receive chargers in advance so charging infrastructure is ready when the buses arrive. Once the rollout completes, the planned fleet would be seven large electric buses, 11 short electric buses for special-education routes, and three white-fleet vans; the district will keep one diesel bus as a backup. Rosado emphasized training (electrical, safety and active-shooter bus procedures) and described in-house staff training that reduces reliance on outside contractors (e.g., plumbers and roof specialists completing certified tasks internally to save costs).
Why it matters: The transition to electric buses and investment in chargers has operational and budget implications (infrastructure, training and vehicle procurement timelines). Rosado said the strategy to install chargers ahead of bus delivery is intended to reduce commissioning delays.
