The San Ramon Valley Unified School District board on Tuesday adopted two resolutions that finalize planned reductions in classified and certificated staff for the 2026-27 school year, citing a drop in enrollment and reduced site funding.
Assistant Superintendent Melanie Jones told trustees that the board had earlier adopted preliminary notices and that the resolutions before the board formally set out which positions will not be continued. The classified resolution (No. 64/25-26) listed employees and additional vacant positions that will be discontinued; Jones said several positions were vacant and that the district had tried to minimize impacts by eliminating unfilled roles where possible.
Trustees discussed the scope and effects of the cuts during a lengthy public exchange. One trustee noted that many reductions were accomplished by leaving vacancies unfilled or by employees accepting reduced hours. District human-resources staff explained that some affected employees retained other assignments in the district and that principals will reconfigure site coverage (for example, noon supervision) as enrollment patterns change.
Board members expressed regret and appreciation for affected employees. Trustee comments emphasized that declining enrollment is the root driver of the reductions and that principals will try to restore hours or positions if site fundraising and enrollment permit rehiring in the fall.
The board then approved a second measure (No. 65/25-26) to reduce certificated staff, a smaller set of FTE than earlier projected due to attrition and schedule changes. In both votes the board approved the resolution and formalized staff notices; staff said affected employees had been notified before May 15. Assistant Superintendent Jones and Human Resources director Evan Powell answered trustees'' questions about bumping, voluntary reductions, vacant positions funded by site/ed foundation donations, and the continuing recruitment for some roles.
What happens next: affected employees retain reemployment rights where applicable; some school sites are already using site revenue and auction proceeds to re-post jobs and bring people back where feasible. Trustees directed staff to monitor site funding and to report back on rehiring possibilities.
Action taken: The board adopted Resolution 64/25-26 to discontinue specified classified services and Resolution 65/25-26 to reduce certificated employees; both were approved by the trustees.
