Christian, the staff presenter, described the request as funding primarily for transportation needs and removal of contaminated soil at a former gas station site so the academy can construct a new learning and wellness center with a gymnasium, labs and other instructional spaces. Staff said the funds would be used for proper disposal and related site work.
Wayman Brett, who identified himself as a U‑Prep board member and building committee chair, described the school’s history and capacity constraints. "We are tipping 500 right now," Brett said, adding that the expansion could add about 20 students and that construction mobilization is set for June with a target completion in May 2027, though LEED/lead certification discussions could affect the schedule.
Brett told the board the school has raised more than half of the campaign funding and listed community partners, including the YMCA and local college partnerships, that will support student programming. Staff emphasized the grant’s remediation focus: excavation of contaminated urban fill and vapor testing, since the site formerly hosted a gas station.
Board members praised the project’s community impact and supported the resolution to submit the grant application for EGLE review; the motion carried by voice vote.
