District college-and-career staff told the board on Nov. 19 that dual-enrollment and articulated early-college courses have grown substantially, with more than 1,000 students enrolled this year and an approximate 90% pass rate for the courses described.
The presentation outlined three pathways to early-college credit (AP exams, concurrent/community-college enrollment outside the school day, and dual-enrollment/ articulation during the school day). Staff emphasized expanding dual enrollment — college courses taught on high-school campuses during the school day — because they remove transportation and scheduling barriers and yield high pass rates and credit attainment. Kennedy High’s pilot math course was highlighted as an example where students who failed Algebra I were remediated and could earn six college credits while making up high-school coursework.
Staff also presented demographic data showing increased proportional enrollment of African-American students in early-college opportunities and increased participation from many English learners; they said counselors will continue targeted outreach and that expansion decisions will align with CTE pathways and student interest. Board members asked about enrollment paperwork friction with community colleges and transcript transfer procedures; staff acknowledged registration pain points and said counselors and the college-and-career team are working on smoother processes and clearer timelines for issuing college transcripts.
No policy vote was taken; the item was a presentation and first discussion of growth strategies for next school-year planning.
