Board adopts Carnegie Learning as Penn‑Harris‑Madison K–12 math curriculum

The Penn‑Harris‑Madison Board of School Trustees voted unanimously April 20 to adopt Carnegie Learning as the district’s new K–12 math curriculum for the 2026–27 school year.

Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Lavant Denel told the board the PHM adoption committee “came to a consensus to recommend Carnegie Learning as our new math curriculum starting next school year,” citing the program’s engaging, rigorous resources and professional learning supports. District presenters said initial summer training will be provided so “every math teacher will receive those days of professional learning,” followed by ongoing, year-to-year implementation support.

Board members asked whether professional learning would reach all teachers and how support would be sustained. Denel and Dr. Mindy Higginson, director of professional learning, said the approach is both an initial district‑wide training and a rotating, multi‑year model targeting grade bands or leadership teams in subsequent years. The administration noted the district has had positive experiences with Carnegie Learning at the middle school level for six years.

The motion to adopt the recommended K–12 materials carried by voice vote, recorded as six in favor and none opposed. The board did not identify a mover or seconder in the record; the administration will proceed with procurement and implementation planning.

Next steps: the district will schedule summer professional learning for teachers and integrate the new curriculum materials into classroom planning ahead of the 2026‑27 school year.
