Board hears CTE expansion plans and teacher-led online professional-learning proposal

The board received updates on Career and Technical Education and a teacher-led professional-learning initiative during the April 20 meeting.
CTE staff told the board that Orange County Schools offers more than 90 CTE courses and over 40 industry-recognized credentials; in 2024–25 students earned more than 1,100 credentials and concentrator graduation rates were high. CTE leaders said they plan to submit the local Perkins application (required for federal and state career-education funds), pursue a grade-expansion grant to reach sixth- and seventh-graders, and continue investments in facilities such as a new Orange High School greenhouse and a Cedar Ridge agricultural lab.
Separately, the superintendent’s Teacher of the Year round table, led by Jose Hadalgo (2025 Teacher of the Year), recommended building a teacher-created online professional-learning and collaboration site to make vetted lesson plans, micro-learning modules and district curriculum resources more searchable and shareable. The team plans to start small and scale the platform over time; the round table also announced the fourth annual Stars of Education conference on August 17 as a venue for teacher-driven professional development.
Board members praised the emphasis on teacher voice and practical professional development and underscored the importance of aligning CTE work with community colleges and local employers to expand students’ postsecondary and workforce pathways.
What’s next: The CTE local application will appear on the May consent agenda for board approval; the round table will continue iterative work on the online resource and prepare the August conference.
