Parent group urges Montgomery Public Schools to act on 'smart vapes,' schedules town hall

A representative of the Council PTA urged Montgomery Public Schools officials on April 14 to act on the rise of so‑called "smart vapes," devices she said are designed to look like consumer gadgets and to appeal to children.
The commenter described features — digital screens, Bluetooth capability, animated displays, speakers and game mechanics that can require puffs to continue play — and said some devices include "boost modes" that deliver larger nicotine doses. "This is predatory on an entirely different level," the speaker said, adding that Bluetooth functionality can allow vapes to function as a workaround for phone restrictions in schools.
The PTA representative announced a town‑hall event, "Clearing the Air," set for April 23 at 6 p.m. in the district auditorium and asked the board and district staff to help promote and attend the event. The board and staff public‑comment rules were read before the comment and the speaker's three minutes were observed.
Board members and staff acknowledged the concern and noted ongoing partnerships with student support services and national partners on vaping prevention and training. The public commenter asked the board to help publicize the event and provide district support for family education.
