Los Altos board adopts Bridges in Mathematics for K–5 after teacher pilot

The Los Altos School District Board unanimously adopted Bridges in Mathematics, third edition, as the district’s K–5 mathematics curriculum after a multi‑step review that included curriculum council study, a pilot program and community feedback.
District staff and the curriculum council described a process that began in spring 2025, used the 2023 California Department of Education mathematics framework as a guiding document, and included a pilot of two programs. About 25% of K–5 teachers piloted materials and 82% of those pilot teachers preferred Bridges, staff said; pilot feedback emphasized inquiry‑based tasks, opportunities for student discourse, supports for multilingual learners and an assessment suite linked to instruction.
Trustees heard that Bridges includes a daily lesson structure with rich mathematical tasks, collaborative investigations, and a repeated "number routines" component intended to build conceptual understanding and fluency across the year. Following a public hearing with no speakers, Trustee Stella moved to adopt Bridges; Trustee Jim seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Staff said the district will move into implementation, continuing teacher input and alignment steps so instruction in elementary grades connects with middle school pathways.
