Mitchell County votes to accept non‑member option with Central Iowa juvenile detention provider

Staff provided historical expenditure context, saying the county has spent $50,740 with the provider since 2013 and that transportation costs have been a significant portion of recent charges. Because Mitchell County sends relatively few youth to the facility and the site is a long drive, staff recommended the non‑member option as more financially prudent.
A motion to accept Option 2B was made, seconded and approved by roll call vote. Board members discussed attending consortium meetings remotely to stay informed despite the loss of voting privileges.
The change affects Mitchell County’s governance relationship with the regional provider but, according to staff, preserves service access and standard service rates. County staff said they will notify the consortium of the county’s decision and attend meetings by Zoom as appropriate.
