Student leaders urge balanced cell‑phone policy, call for AI and mental‑health education

A group of 11th‑grade members of Basset High’s student leadership council presented district trustees with four recommendations to shape a forthcoming cell‑phone policy: avoid a complete ban, set consistent classroom expectations and consequences, update and publicize student handbook language, and incorporate education on responsible AI use and the mental‑health impacts of phones and social media.
Joanna, speaking for the Olympian Student Leadership Council, said students favored a balanced approach that preserves access during passing periods, lunch and before and after school while restricting phone use during instruction. ‘‘We support a structured but realistic phone policy rather than banning phones entirely,” she said.
Students asked to be involved in drafting policy and updating handbooks so rules are clear to students, teachers and families. Trustees responded that student input is valuable and encouraged further student participation in policy development.
The board did not take a vote on policy language; staff said policy work will continue during the coming months with opportunities for additional student and community input.
