Basset Unified adopts ESS leadership profile to guide superintendent search

The Basset Unified School District board on April 21 approved a superintendent leadership profile developed by Education Support Services following interviews, focus groups and an online survey of parents, staff and students. The profile highlights trust, visible instructional leadership and staff recruitment and retention as priorities for the next superintendent.
ESS consultants Dr. King and Dr. French told the board the district’s small size, strong relationships and student‑centered focus were repeatedly cited as strengths that would attract candidates. ‘‘An atmosphere of trust and demonstrated knowledge of teaching and learning rose to the top of every data set,’’ Dr. French said during the presentation.
The profile groups priorities into staffing and systems needs: recruiting and retaining teachers, aligning district systems for consistency, and increasing family engagement. ESS recommended the board include the report in candidate screening materials and use it to shape interview questions.
Board members praised the outreach and data. In discussion, trustees asked about respondent counts and how priorities would be weighted during interviews; ESS said survey and focus‑group responses would inform interview rubrics and that staff would provide respondent summaries on request.
The motion to approve the leadership profile was made by Miss Flores and seconded by Miss Ria and carried on a roll‑call vote. Board staff said the profile will be incorporated into the superintendent search packet and used by the screening committee as candidates are identified.
