Wanita Leone, the city secretary, said the petition circulated by Councilmember Julius Buckley and his supporters required 472 valid signatures; the county verified 314 valid signatures. Because the petition did not reach the threshold, the measure will not appear on the May ballot. Leone said the city notified the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the Secretary of State as required. Council recognized the report and adopted a motion to document the insufficient number of signatures and to take no action to call an election at this time.
Councilmembers noted that, because the petition failed to qualify for the current ballot, the petition sponsors may circulate again for a future election without a one‑year waiting period (the one‑year freeze applies only when a measure goes to the ballot and is defeated).
