Homeowners at 121 Miles Manor Court returned to the DRC with a multi-element application covering front and side doors, a proposed picket fence, gutters/downspouts, exterior lighting, chimney caps and potential site/parking changes.
Staff told the committee the building dates to about 1930 and that the proposed front and side doors replace nonhistoric openings; the front door design was generally acceptable and staff advised providing shop drawings. On gutters, staff noted the building sits on a 1930 cutoff and that half-round gutters are commonly appropriate for Tudor-influenced homes; the applicant said OG-style gutters previously existed and that either OG or half-round would be acceptable.
On lighting and lanterns, the owners asked about gas versus electric fixtures; commissioners noted several nearby houses have gas lanterns and that a historically appropriate fixture and warm-white light are the key considerations. Staff asked for fixture dimensions. For a proposed picket fence in the front yard, staff asked for clear mapping of fence extents, gates and heights; commissioners generally found the picket style appropriate but requested a marked-up site plan.
On the question of parking and a motor court, staff reminded the applicants that front-yard parking typically conflicts with guidelines and suggested moving parking to the side or rear if possible; commissioners noted many similar requests have been discouraged or denied historically and recommended coordinating with the city’s streets/zoning departments about right-of-way issues.
For chimney caps the applicants said clay pots were previously approved but are now incompatible with the installed metal flues; commissioners suggested copper or low-profile metal pots and asked the applicants to submit material/spec drawings. The DRC did not take a final vote and asked the owners to return with fence extents, door and lantern shop drawings, gutter/downspout placement, and chimney-cap specifications.
