Monroe County, Army Corps collaboration maps flood-prone roadways for 'Turn Around, Don’t Drown' signage

Monroe County planning staff told the Technical Advisory Committee on April 22 they collaborated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Silver Jackets team, county emergency management and the county highway department to create a map showing roadway locations with a history or risk of severe flooding.
The map combines the county’s roadside inventory (locations appropriate for signs), reports from the Monroe County Fire Protection District and Emergency Management Agency, and flood-zone layers from the Department of Natural Resources. The goal is to identify locations where ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ signage and safety messaging should be placed and to pursue funds to install signs at priority locations.
Staff said the outreach followed past high‑water rescues and a local fatality and that the program could use existing funding sources to add signs targeted at historically or potentially inundated roadways. The map is intended to provide a data-driven approach to reduce vehicle‑in‑flooding incidents and to inform county and municipal placement of roadside signage.
