INDOT to adopt AASHTO safety software; Monroe MPO uploads traffic counts to INDOT database

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to adopt the AASHTO safety-analysis software suite to replace an older, locally developed tool, staff told the Monroe County MPO Technical Advisory Committee on April 22. INDOT’s rollout will include beta testing this summer and fall and planned system-wide use beginning Jan. 1.
MPO staff said the AASHTO package analyzes intersections and segments, dives into crash causal factors and will include modules that identify recurring patterns. MPO staff volunteered to serve as beta testers to evaluate the tool’s local applicability.
Separately, the MPO uploaded roughly 311 road-tube traffic-count locations and their results into INDOT’s Traffic Count Database System (TCDS) using a statewide software license offered by INDOT. Staff said the statewide license reduced local costs by about $2,500, centralizes count results and makes management easier. Committee members clarified the counts are conducted using road tubes by local engineering staff (directional counts, design hourly volumes and average daily traffic), not through camera or license-plate recognition systems.
Staff asked members to stay tuned for additional details after beta tests and data-integration work, and said they will share findings on how the new analysis tools and centralized count database affect local planning and safety analyses.
